Finding What You Want Without a Search

AllMyFaves proposes that you aren’t able to find what you’re looking for when you do a search on most major search engines. When looking for a specific site, you come up with thousands of pages of results and nothing you can see is what you’re looking for. So, instead of searching, they propose that you just go to their website and find what you’re after there.

Seems like a reasonable idea, except for one thing: since when have you searched for Target and not found What about Wal-Mart? Amazon? Kmart? All those sites are featured prominently on the “searchless” page of Last time I checked, when I searched for Kmart or anything even close to it (try “krt”), was on the front page of my results.

Looking through this site, not only is the front page hugely cluttered (though, I guess organized, in a way), but most of the links are obvious ones that people generally already know. Here’s the giveaway , though: most of them are affiliate links with “hops” or trackers.

So that explains the site quickly. It’s an affiliate-based marketing site. I don’t have a problem with affiliate links or sites that promote them. I’ve used them myself when doing book or movie reviews. I do have a problem with sites that do so without letting you know that this is what they’re doing. On AllMyFaves, their “best sites in each category” may not be the best, just the best-paying affiliates.

Use with caution.

I know some “older” people that love it, but it never made sense to me. Its just an affiliate site.
