This has to be one of the most interesting stories from the past month. Amazon is a big force to be reckoned with online, but the move into movies – internet movies no less – looks to be very interesting indeed.
The aptly titled Amazon Studios has an array of monthly contests and also an annual awards event. The top prize in the annual awards is a cool $1,000,000. The site also has a deal with Warner Brothers, which means that there is a chance that a good movie uploaded to the site could become a proper cinematic movie in the future.
The new venture is bold and promising, but time will tell whether it will reveal any new talents in the movie business. Screenwriters and directors will now have a new chance to be seen and this is where the real excitement lies. No doubt plenty of budding screenwriters and directors will visit the site to see whether there is any real potential here that can be mined.
We have already seen how Amazon has cornered the social commerce market. Perhaps we will now see them corner the market in entertainment. It is easy to go online and review scripts written by other people, and the interactive nature of the site looks to be a winner. It is quite a departure from Amazon’s usual ecommerce methods, but if it works we could be thinking of Amazon in a completely different way in the future.
