Amazon will build its bubble in Seattle

The City of Seattle, Washington has given the go-ahead to Amazon for their five-story office building, which will be framed as three intersecting spheres per an architect’s drawing. The new building will be built on Amazon’s three-block Denny Triangle campus in the city.

The city’s design review board unanimously approved the building design and a building permit will be issued once the planning and development department approves details for the building and compliance with city code.

Next to the spheres will be a 38-story tower, which is far less interesting.

The spheres themselves are meant to be “organic” in appearance, with an interior that includes open office floor plans, flexible workspaces, and an atrium. The spheres will range from 80 to 95 feet, with the largest being at center.

Between the spheres and the huge tower building will be a dog park, walkway, and small open field. Public spaces in the spheres themselves will allow passerby to interact with the buildings without interfering with their workday purpose. About 18,000 square feet of retail space will be included.

Deny Triangle sits on the block between Blanchard and Lenora streets and Sixth and Seventh avenues. A five-foot wide cycle track on one side of Blanchard Street will also be added by Amazon to connect with the track planned for Seventh Avenue by the city.

Many city residents in Seattle wrote letters of approval and acclaim for the design to the City Council and buzz on the Internet has been largely positive.

Construction on the first phase of the new campus has begun, including applications for excavation permits to begin the buildings.
