Apple to offer smartwatch by early 2015

In an effort to diversify its line of products, Apple unveiled its very first line of smartwatches on Tuesday.

The new Apple Watch device is available in two sizes: 1.5 inches (38 mm) or 1.65 inches (42 mm). There are three variants known as Edition, Sport and Watch.

Buyers can choose from different materials such as 18-karat yellow or rose gold; black or polished stainless steel; and silver or grey anodized aluminium. They can also select from several straps and 11 different faces.

The smartwatch is expected to enter the market early next year, but you need to have an iPhone to use it. It only works with the newly launched iPhone 6 and 6 Plus as well as its predecessors, the iPhone 5, 5c and 5s.

However, the downside is the product’s battery life. Although the iPhone maker did not talk about it, a company spokeswoman said buyers should charge the smartwatch each night.

Daniel Matte, an analyst at tech research company Canalys, said: “It’s a little surprising to me. I thought they were targeting at least a couple of days of usage.”

Moreover, its flat design is “underwhelming”, according to ABI Research Analyst Tim Spencer, who was expecting a curved screen that could have allowed for a bigger and longer-lasting battery.

“Battery life is likely to be an issue in a device of this size,” he noted. “It is a problem for people interested in sleep monitoring.”
