Barclays has announced its support for Zapp’s Pay by Bank App ahead of the launch of Apple Pay in the UK.
The VocaLink-developed service allows users to pay for their purchases directly from their online bank account through a bank’s mobile app. Barclays Pingit mobile money transfer service is set to be the first bank app to go live with Zapp once it launches in October.
The addition of payments through the Pingit app makes the Pay by Bank app the first total market mobile payment service in the UK that is available to all consumers regardless of which smartphone brand or bank they use.
While Zapp will only be available online initially, VocaLink revealed that an in-store POS-based option will be launched at a later date.
Zapp’s addition to the Pingit payments portfolio implies that Barclays Corporate Banking unit can act as the service’s distributor to corporations operating in utilities, transport, retail, and financial services as well as local authorities. Barclays joins Elavon, WorldPay, Realex, SagePay, and Optimal Payments in promoting Zapp to the UK merchant market.
Major British retail brands that have pledged support for Zapp include Asda, Sainsbury’s, Thomas Cook, Shop Direct, and House of Fraser. First Direct, HSBC, Santander, and Nationwide, all of which are Apple Pay supporters, also announced their support for Zapp.
“We’re delighted to be able to announce that Pay by Bank app will now include Barclays Pingit,” said Zapp chief executive Peter Keenan.
“Having Barclays come on board – with their huge scale and enviable reputation for innovation, coupled with their extensive corporate client base – reaffirms that Barclays and Zapp are at the cutting edge of Fintech, innovation and collaboration.”
