Microblogging site Twitter is great for spreading around small bits of information, but who would have thought the site could also help you pay for products online. This is now possible as credit card company American Express has recently unveiled a new way to make online purchases using Twitter at the Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week. Specifically, it lets card members pay for online merchandise just by using a Twitter hashtag (#). Dubbed as @AmexSync, this technology allows users of American Express cards to buy merchandise from Sony, Amazon, Urban Zen and Xbox 360, as well as AMEX Gift Cards, simply through special Twitter hashtags.
The company’s Card Sync feature was first rolled out on Twitter in March 2012 to provide coupon-free savings to cardholders tweeting special promo hashtags from select online vendors. For card members who have already synchronised their card with Twitter, they only need to include some information such as a billing address.
The process is easy to set up. First, cardholders should synchronise a valid card at sync.americanexpress.com/twitter. Once synced, they can tweet specific product hashtags for the merchandise they wish to buy.
After that, cardholders should go to the @Connect tab (https://twitter.com/i/connect) for a reply from @AmexSync, which contains a confirmation hashtag. Then users have 15 minutes in which they must tweet the confirmation hashtag to verify the purchase. Once the purchase is confirmed, the merchandise will be delivered to the buyer’s billing address with free two-day delivery
