Hitchers.com is sort of the grown-up version of the college “hitch a ride boards” many of us are familiar with. You know, those bulletin boards on campus where people would post notes saying they’re driving to such-and-such next weekend or looking to go to so-and-so next Friday? In the hopes someone else was going that way or would want to hitch along for fun or gas money.
This rendition is similar, but more sophisticated and useful for the regular (or semi-regular) traveler. It works in mostly the same way, but without the stigma of not knowing who you’re paired with.
First, the car is a limousine—not the big fancy ones, the airport variety, costs about the same as a cab—with a driver and your shared ride is with someone who’s arriving on the same flight as you (to eliminate delays). The two of you share the ride as far as you can and split the cost.
The service can be narrowed by gender preference and matches are voted on by members after the trip (both limo and shared rider) with thumbs up or down by the participants so you can get an idea of what people think if the person or limo service has been used before.
The rates are comparable to half the price of just taking a cab and you might meet someone interesting to boot. The matches can be made for either to or from the airport. It’s a pretty good idea and if enough people use it, hitchers could be a innovative way to save some money too.
