Is The Conficker Virus Another Boogieman or Pending Doom?

picture-162Well on the eve of April Fools Day, we have the newest ticking time bomb on it’s way.  Not to be as publicly hyped as the Y2K virus that made rational people stockpile cash, food and weapons.  On January 2, 2000 these people felt a bit silly and had to eat all of those canned goods, but at least they were on the side of caution.  Besides tech geeks like me are really the only ones who have even heard of Conficker and even less, know it’s other names Win32 or Downadup.

This Conficker worm was discovered last fall and is harder to get rid of then a frat boys STD’s.  Reports have said 10 million plus computers have been claimed to have this virus.

Is this some new Trojan horse to get all of our personal data?  I do not know why you would need to personally worry when companies like Choicepoint have all of your data and they can leak it in a major way. Over 800 cases of identity theft that resulted from their data breach.  They paid over $15 million because of the inconvenience. http://www.ftc.gov/opa/2006/01/choicepoint.shtm

So I speak for myself when I tell you I am not worried about the renegade hackers nearly as much as I am worried about Corporate America aka. The Man! Or our very own US. Government aka. Big Brother.

Be smart and continually change your passwords and do not use 123456 as your password!  That, so you know is the most used six digit password.  I guess it is easy to remember and if you are that dumb I think you should be robbed.  It is like natural selection of wealth.

Last note of help is this.  Please stop using IE or as the average person knows it as Internet Explorer.  Go use something like Mozilla Firefox,  Safari, or at least Google Chrome.  They are all available and all free.  Tell me 24 hours from now if you were infected by Conficker.  I will bet your not infected as much as you are affected.
