Not your ordinary wristwatch

Apple is reportedly working on a new wristwatch-like product at its Cupertino headquarters. According to various media sources, Apple’s smart watch will operate on the iOS platform and will be made of curved glass.

Although many of the watch’s features are left to speculation, one can safely assume that the glass will be from Corning, who was also responsible for the Gorilla Glass used in the iPhone. Last year, the glass specialty company announced that it had created bendable glass, known as Willow Glass, following ten years of development.

In a New York Times report, Pete Bocko, Chief Technology Officer for Corning Glass Technologies, revealed that Willow Glass can be wrapped around a cylindrical object and that this could be applied to the creation of something akin to a watch.

Rumours of an Apple watch are nothing new. Tech.163 reported in December last year that Apple could be developing a smart watch with Intel. Connecting Apple devices through Bluetooth, the watch could feature a 1.5-inch PMOLED screen with ITO-coated glass.

This is one of the most persistent Apple rumours circulating on the internet. Many users have transformed their iPad Nanos to watches by adding a wristband, indicating there would be demand for this type of product. Any potential new watch, however, faces serious competition from prominent upstarts such as e-paper with their Bluetooth-enabled Pebble.

It is time for Apple to join the watch bandwagon. The idea of a Bluetooth watch linked to a smartphone would certainly be appealing to a whole lot of people, not only for convenience but also for entertainment.
