Platform9 raises $10 million to evolve deployment and management service

After raising $10 million in Series B funding, Platform9 hopes to make it easier for businesses that want to integrate a private cloud into their existing servers by using OpenStack.

Menlo Ventures led the funding round, with Redpoint Ventures also participating. The successful Series B brings Platform9’s total funding pot to $14.5 million.

OpenStack’s platform can be tricky to install, which is why there is now an entire market of distros, services, and consultancies designed to help businesses get started with OpenStack. Under Platform9, the product’s users supply their own server infrastructure while OpenStack is deployed on a Software-as-a-Service basis.

It’s as straightforward as signing up online and then installing the required agent software, which then links to the user’s Platform9 account. OpenStack will manage the hardware storage and network resources for the user, and it can be configured to set quotas and roles through the Platform9 interface.

Platform9 co-founder and CEO Sirish Raghuram said: “We’ve had a phenomenal year and our momentum is accelerating as organizations look to deliver an AWS like cloud experience using their internal infrastructure. With Platform9 Managed OpenStack, organizations can now focus on accelerating innovation using internal private clouds instead of spending months or years implementing their private cloud … The Series B funding enables Platform9 to further accelerate our product roadmap for our growing customer base.”

Platform9’s sales grew by 200 per cent quarter-on-quarter since the service was launched in January 2015. Companies from more than 17 countries have now signed up to license agreements.

Platform9 will work with Linux servers running KVM hypervisor on CentOS, Red Hat Enterprise Linux, Ubuntu, and VMware’s vSphere and Docker.
