Social commerce is all about utilizing social networks to market and/or sell items.  Interestingly, while Facebook and Twitter are having a hard time finding their place in today’s market, a newcomer to social networking is getting lots of attention from marketers and retailers.

Pinterest, the combination photo sharing and link sharing site, has become the new focus of those interested in socially connected commerce.  At its current pace of traffic driving, it may become the most significant driver of social traffic to e-commerce sites by the end of the year, according to AllThingsD.

This report in AllThingsD comes from Monetate, which does the social marketing for huge clients like Best Buy, OfficeMax, The Sports Authority, and more.  The report unequivocally says that if you aren’t using Pinterest to market your business, you’re going to be far behind if you don’t start now.

In recent months, many online retailers have started to integrate Pinterest into each one of their product pages, so that it is easy for a consumer to easily “pin” a product.  You may have noticed the “Pin” symbol on Amazon, OpenSky and others.

In only one year, Pinterest has grown from 1% of all social traffic to retailers to 26% while Facebook has fallen from 88% to 60%.  Meanwhile, social traffic itself grew by 77%.

So if you haven’t adopted Pinterest into your marketing.. you’d better.
