Rev.iew.me Community Website Reviews

reviewmeThe idea of rev.iew.me seems straightforward and O so blasé when looked at initially. “Another community site review website?” Oi.

It’s actually quite different. It’s not really a “review” site so much as it is a “critique” site instead. Let me explain how it works so you get the idea.

First, users from the community can log into the site and review websites that have been posted by others—usually the site’s creator or design team. Reviewers don’t just look at how well the site does or how useful it’s service or products might be, but instead looks at the site’s function and design. In other words, reviewers look at the site’s usability, look and feel, and so forth.

These reviews are meant to enhance the website and give the designers and owners an idea of what they could be doing or what needs fixing. Anyone who’s been in the design or development business knows that a narrow focus is the hardest thing to avoid when working on a project for any length of time, so Rev.iew.me is definitely something that might be of use.

Of course, the site is still full of the usual commenters who give little input or conduct cookie-cutter reviews (ala KillerStartups), but many of the reviewers are professionals in Web design and development and can give real and useful thoughts. As a community-run site, you take what you can get with a grain of salt, of course.

Rev.iew.me holds contests, highlights new entries and popular submissions and so forth to encourage users to participate. It also utilizes a point system wherein users who frequent the site, post reviews of at least 100 or more words, and actively participate receive a higher “grade” (and thus seniority) than users who do not. This helps eliminate spam and gives a ranking to the users who’re posting reviews, so site owners can filter the reviews down to only those that are likely to be more relevant.

The site’s owners, Jem Turner and Jacky Gilbertson, created the website after a similar website, yoursite.nu, began to fail and become overrun with marketers and spammers after development on the site all but ceased due to funding issues. Yoursite.nu has since been purchased by new ownership, so a comeback may be in the works.
