Balaji settles Bitcoin bet by donating $1.5mln

He originally declared a $1mln bet in March, contending that the world economy is on the verge of quick change, and because of this, we will see the quick adoption of Bitcoin

Former Coinbase Chief Technology Officer Balaji Srinivasan today stated that he has settled a Bitcoin bet made in March by donating $1.5mln of his own money. And he has done it to prove a point, Srinivasan says, that the U.S. economy is in such bad condition, people will rather rush to crypto currency.

He originally declared a $1mln bet in March, contending that the world economy is on the verge of quick change, and because of this, we will see the quick adoption of Bitcoin—which he terms “hyperbitcoinization.”

The initial speculation was made with Twitter user James Medlock and set out that if Bitcoin failed to reach $1mln in 3 months, he would receive $1mln in Circles USDC stablecoin.

Today, Srinivasan stated the bet had been concluded by mutual agreement and settled ahead of time, giving $500k to poverty charity Give Directly, $500k to Bitcoin core developers, and $500k to Medlock.

Therefore, I settled the bet ahead of time and donated even more than I had committed, Srinivasan stated today on Twitter. I spent my own money to send a provably costly signal that there is something wrong with the economy, and that it is not going to be a ‘soft landing’ like (Fed Chair Jerome) Powell commits—but something much worse.

While it could be seen as finally giving up the bet, Srinivasan contended that his argument           for donating the money before the 90-days were up is that he believes in the public good, but unfortunately we cannot depend on the public sector anymore to tell us when something is wrong.

He contends that the U.S. economy will go into hyperinflation and Bitcoin will be a go-to safe haven—finally hitting a market capitalisation of $19.3trln. The crypto presently has a market capitalisation of $555bln.

At one time, Bitcoin was trading for $28,827, as per CoinGecko, meaning the crypto would have to surge in value by 3,369 per cent to reach $1mln per coin.

Bitcoin is presently valued 58 per cent lower compared to its all-time high of $69,044 hit in November 2021. Nonetheless in May 2013, Bitcoin was priced at $123.10, meaning that over a decade, the biggest crypto has gained 23,317 per cent.

He further said that economic crisis was coming and that he made the donations to make the point that things could unravel quickly.

Several things are breaking at the same time, Srinivasan further said, citing the U.S. debt ceiling, the banking turmoil, bonds losing value, and the Russia-Ukraine war.

He said: I just burned a million to tell you they are printing trillions.
