Bitcoin falls below $30,000 again as crypto currencies drop

The biggest digital currency dropped 4.5 per cent before recuperating some of the declines to trade at around $29,276

Bitcoin fell below the $30k mark amid a broader pull back in crypto currencies, as persistently high UK inflation stirred up concerns of higher-for-longer interest rates.

The biggest digital currency dropped 4.5 per cent before recuperating some of the declines to trade at around $29,276 at 3:05 p.m. in New York on Wednesday. Bitcoin has traded on both sides of the benchmark after hitting that level last week for the first time since June.

Ether declined 5.6 per cent and smaller tokens such as Solana and Avalanche saw steeper losses. Crypto-related stocks like Coinbase Global, Marathon Digital and MicroStrategy also dipped.

The majority of the declines came following UK consumer price data on Wednesday which showed inflation continued to be higher than 10 per cent in March, adding to recent indications that central banks will have to keep raising borrowing costs. That is giving traders a respite after Bitcoin soared nearly 80 per cent in 2023, a rally led in large part by bets that rate cuts were impending.

The unexpected selloff sparked liquidations of $175mln worth of long positions in crypto markets, according to data from Coinglass.

This appears to be a classic liquidation and structural market reaction, according to Vetle Lunde, senior analyst at K33 Research.

US economic indicators this month have also undermined the idea that a crisis among regional banks will compel the Fed to renounce tightening. An important measure of US inflation showed signs of easing in March, but probably not enough to keep the Fed from changing its course. Moreover, US workers are seeing pay increases outpace inflation.

Despite this the latest interest-rate concerns are not likely to stop this year’s crypto rally, as per Fadi Aboualfa, head of research at custodian Copper.
