Bitcoin holds steady after three-day rally

Bitcoin erased declines that had sent it slumping more than 4 per cent earlier in the session and appeared ready to once again breach the $25,000 mark

Bitcoin wrapped up the week on an even note, regaining previous price declines to end flat as bullish sentiment offset worries over broadening US crypto enforcement activities and the backdrop of increasing interest rates.

The biggest digital token gained 2 per cent on Friday afternoon in New York before finishing a bit changed at nearly $24,490 as of 5 p.m. Bitcoin erased losses that had sent it tumbling over 4 per cent earlier during the session and seemed prepared to once again break the $25,000 level. It breached that level for the first time since August on Thursday. Smaller tokens like Ether, Avalanche and Binance Coin also rebounded, as did an index of the 100 largest coins.

For Frank Cappelleri, founder of CappThesis, supporting Bitcoin is the fact that it has formed a higher low on its weekly chart.

The ability of Bitcoin to hold out against the recent downturn is a story in-and-of itself, he said. And, along with the action since last summer, a potentially big bottoming formation could be completed soon.

Digital assets advanced while US equities dropped as traders fully priced in quarter-point interest rate hikes at the Fed’s next meeting, with more hikes of 50 basis points also a probability. The S&P 500 Index as well as the Nasdaq 100 fell over 1 per cent in Friday’s session, though they cut losses by the end of the trading day.

Past week’s macroeconomic data impacted the broad-based risk rally parade we have seen over the past weeks, including a recent hit to the stellar YTD growth in Bitcoin, according to Sylvia Jablonski, CEO and chief investment officer at Defiance ETFs. The good news is that inflation is coming down.

It has been quite a strong start to the year for Bitcoin, which during 2022 dropped 64 per cent in its second-worst yearly performance on record. In spite of the slew of negative news and series of US regulatory actions, the coin’s price has continued to be resilient. Sceptics argue the surge is vulnerable to the risk of higher-for-longer rates, though others see opportunity for buy-and-hold investors.

Investors may contemplate looking through what the Fed will do this year, knowing that we are approaching the end, and buying on the dips of risk assets that may continue to shine later in the year, Jablonski said.
