Bitcoin dropped nearly 4.2 per cent to 28,137.76, ether shed 4 per cent to 1,828.81
Crypto currencies slid on Monday to start the week and new month as investors speculate the acquisition of First Republic Bank could put an end to the banking turmoil, which has been the biggest driver of 2023’s bitcoin rally.
The biggest crypto currency in terms of market capitalization dropped nearly 4.2 per cent to 28,137.76 to begin the week and new month, as per Coin Metrics. Ether shed 4 per cent to 1,828.81.
On Monday regulators seized control of First Republic, making it the fourth U.S. bank collapse in 2023 and the biggest one since the financial crisis of 2008. JPMorgan Chase will take over most of the bank’s deposits and assets.
In April, bitcoin’s price rallied in the final week of the month as troubles at the bank unravelled. The crypto currency’s trading has been choppy, though, as investors straddle the impacts of the banking turmoil on crypto with high inflation, Fed policy, a potential recession and a growingly bearish narrative building around the U.S. dollar.
It is not clear whether the banking turmoil narrative can continue to be a boost for bitcoin, stated Alex Thorn, head of firmwide research at Galaxy. In general, the market lacks clear positive near-term stimulus, with supply issues overhanging bitcoin. That being said, bitcoin accumulation by small addresses is surpassing allocation, and we anticipate Ethereum staking to rise, each of which provides a supportive supply narrative.
Outside of crypto-native factors, we anticipate a back-of-the-year macro environment to be marked by tightening, recession, and an extending multipolarity in the world economy, all of which can be supportive of gold and bitcoin, Thorn said.
Investors have been anticipating a decline from bitcoin’s Q1 rally, even though crypto currency continues to be on its rising trend and has advanced nearly 70 per cent for the year, after closing over 60 per cent lower. April was the first time in two years that bitcoin achieved a fourth positive month in a row.
