Dash blockchain stops after upgrade attempt

Data suggests that the most recent block verified on the network was more than 16 hours ago

Multiple sources have reported that the Dash blockchain came to a halt at block height 1,874,879 after an attempted upgrade to version 19 by the developers. At present, data suggests that the most recent block verified on the network was more than 16 hours ago.

Block production stopped on Monday, May 22, 2023, prompting Dash Core Group Chief Technology Officer Samuel Westrich to take to Twitter at 1:12 a.m. Eastern (ET) to address the problem. In his tweet, Westrich disclosed that the Dash Core upgrade to version 19 had experienced a snag, causing the chain to stop and block production to halt.

The chain is stopped and presently not producing blocks. We have everyone probing the issue. I will continue with updates on Twitter as we have more information, Westrich stated.

There are also signs that the upgrade may have resulted in a fork, resulting in two different chains. For instance, the blockchain explorer at dash.org reports that the last block mined was block height 1,874,879, which was mined by Viabtc. But, Blockchair’s explorer shows that block 1,874,880 was mined by Binance’s mining pool, indicating that the chain may have split.

News of the block production snag swiftly spread across social media platforms such as Twitter. Just a few days back on May 15, the official Twitter account of Dashpay had urged all Dash network users to update their software to accommodate the forthcoming hard fork. Nearly five hours back, the Dash Core developer by the name of Pasta stated that the release of version 19.1.0 would tackle the issues at hand.

This release should resolve the chain stall once enough masternodes and miners have upgraded, Pasta stated. Please be aware of the known issues listed in the release statement. A reindex may be required. The tweet by Pasta was published at 1:33 p.m. ET on Monday. A Twitter user by the name of Dash Memes responded to Pasta to thank the developers for the latest release.
