The move will provide investors with access to digital tokens worth over $30bln
The software that supports the second-largest crypto coin ether was upgraded on Wednesday and is online, according to a tweet by crypto currency exchange Binance.
The move will provide investors with access to digital tokens worth over $30bln.
Known as Shapella, the latest upgrade to the Ethereum blockchain since its Merge upgrade will allow investors to redeem an offshoot of ether tokens that they have deposited on the blockchain network during the last three years.
Such tokens, known as “staked ether”, presently constitute nearly 15 per cent of all ether tokens, as per data firm Dune Analytics, and are worth around $31bln.
The Shanghai/Shapella Upgrade is complete. Deposits & withdrawals for Ether, Optimism, Artbitrum and ERC20 tokens via the Ethereum, Optimism, and Arbitrum networks are now back online, tweeted Binance.
The changes may lead to increased volatility for ether, investors have forecasted.
Some think that widespread redemptions could lead to a spate of selling, in turn weighing on ether’s price, whose market value of nearly $230bln is topped only by bitcoin.
The release of this formerly unrealised investment may result in considerable downward price pressure in case it is immediately liquidated, Deutsche Bank analysts stated in a note.
In its last significant upgrade, Ethereum acutely lowered its energy usage in September – a move supporters said would give Ethereum an edge as it looks to exceed bitcoin.
But ether has continued to lag its bigger competitor, rising just below 60 per cent in 2023 compared with an over 80 per cent climb for bitcoin.
After trillions of dollars were wiped from the crypto market last year, the sector has rallied in 2023 on anticipations that central bank interest rate hikes are slowing.
Ethereum has grown popular in DeFi apps that provide financial services while avoiding conventional industry gatekeepers like banks.
It remains, though, little used in mainstream commerce or finance.
