British mobile network operator EE has rolled out the most affordable 4G smartphone in the United Kingdom. The phone is priced at only £39 for existing subscribers and £49 for new clients.

Although some of the EE Rook’s specs are not very impressive, such as its 1GHz processor and 4-inch 800×480 display, its price tag is significantly cheaper than the £559 Samsung Galaxy S6 or the £539 iPhone 6.

Powered by Google’s latest Android 5.1 Lollipop OS, the handset has a 4G LTE connection, making it capable of download speeds of up to 30 megabytes per second (Mbps).

It also comes with 1GB of RAM and 8GB of storage, which can be increased to up to 40GB via the phone’s microSD slot.

A 5-megapixel camera can be found on the back of the phone. The Rook has a 1,500mAh battery, which should provide five hours of call time and 400 hours of standby.

Those who purchase the EE Rook from the telco will be eligible for discounts on several products, including a 20 per cent rebate on a £14.99 selfie stick.

“We believe everyone should have access to 4G and the experiences it offers on the go,” said EE’s Director of Devices Sharon Meadows.

She added that thanks to its amazingly low price, more people will be able to enjoy EE’s fast mobile network, whether they are browsing the internet, streaming videos, listening to music, playing games, or downloading apps.
