HTC to unveil smartphone, smartwatch in March

Taiwanese company HTC is expected to unveil its next flagship smartphone in March, offering improved audio and video features.

Code-named M9, the marquee phone will be released at the Mobile World Congress to be held in Barcelona, where the largest smartphone makers in the world, including Huawei and Samsung, will showcase their latest products.

The new phone, which will be the successor to the HTC One M8, boasts an HTC UltraPixel front camera as well as a 20-megapixel rear camera, revealed a person familiar with the matter.

The new handset will be equipped with Qualcomm’s eight-core Snapdragon 810 processor, which offers advanced video capabilities. It will also use Sense 7, which is HTC’s latest version of the Sense user interface, and the latest audio technology from Dolby Laboratories.

The UltraPixel sensor integrated into the phone features larger, fewer pixels, which are designed to capture clearer images even in lower light.

Aside from the smartphone, HTC is also expected to unveil its first smartwatch at the Mobile World Congress. The watch represents the company’s latest effort to expand beyond the smartphone market.

The watch will link with Under Armour’s new fitness software, building on a partnership that was announced earlier this month.

The company’s smartwatch was originally set for launch in 2014. However, the release was deferred after company executives said the smartwatch was not ready.

The availability and pricing for the two devices have not yet been confirmed. Although the company received positive reviews for its devices, HTC has struggled to compete with companies such as Apple and Samsung.

The company posted its first profitable quarter following three consecutive quarters of loss in 2014.
