State Tech better for solving issues at Denmark Tech

The Denmark Technical College Area Commission chairman and a state senator disagree on the institution’s problems and its future governance.

Orangeburg state Sen. Brad Hutto on Tuesday introduced legislation to dissolve the DTC Area Commission and turn school governance over to the State Board for Technical and Comprehensive Education. There is nothing in the proposed legislation about closing Denmark Technical College.

Denmark Tech officials have scheduled a news conference at the college’s administration building on Friday morning to address Hutto’s bill.

Commission Chairman Thomas Williams did not wait until Friday to speak, saying Tuesday, “Some politicians say they are doing this because they don’t want us to end up like South Carolina State or other HBCUs. When you start talking about shutting down schools, it’s because you can’t pay your bills or you have lost your accreditation. We don’t have those problems, and we have $2 million (£1.63 million) in the bank.”
